Postdoctoral position in Ocean-Wave Coupling at LEGOS (Toulouse, France)

The LEGOS (Toulouse, France), has received a 2x10 months funding within the framework of the satellite project Odysea (https://odysea.ucsd.edu/) and the French Navy. The objective is to perform process studies of ocean wave (OW) interactions and their impact on the waves and the oceanic (sub)mesoscale in the Gulf Stream region. As described below, LEGOS seeks a postdoctoral researcher to work on this project.

The postdoc will participate in the analysis and development of a coupled wave (WW3), atmosphere (WRF), and ocean (CROCO) configuration at the mesoscale and submesoscale over the Gulf Stream region. The development activities will mainly focus on the definition of new configurations of the coupled model (at the oceanic mesoscale) with sensitivity studies aimed at disentangling the different feedback loops between the ocean, the atmosphere, and the surface gravity waves (with feedbacks to the atmosphere).

Using existing and new simulations, the main scientific goal will be to analyze the extent to which mesoscale oceanic activity can influence surface gravity waves and vice versa. The analysis will include eddy tracking (and composite) analysis using the AMEDA eddy tracker, simulations, and synthetic observations mimicking the (possible) Odysea satellite. A strong collaboration with the Odysea consortium, the Shom (F. Dumas) and the Univ. of Thalahasse (M. Larranaga) is expected. The position is available for 20 months, with the possibility to extend it for 1 year.

Applicants should have a PhD in Oceanic Sciences, effective oral and written communication skills, and an interest air-sea interactions and numerical modeling. Strong programming skills and running regional or global numerical models (wave, oceanic and possibly atmospheric) are also essential.
